Galway Book Launch

The Galway launch of Traditional Boats of Ireland was hosted by Coiste Oidhreachta Chomhar Chuigéil, in Leitir Mealláin (Lettermullen), on 26 July 2008, ably organised by local maritime historian John Bhaba Jack Ó Conghaile. There was a large attendance at the regatta held earlier that day as part of Féile Chuigéil. It was an extraordianary sight to see more than 20 hookers, gleoiteogs and púcáns gathered in this beautiful harbour, from which turf was 'run' to the Aran Islands until the 1970s.

Seoladh Traditional Boats of Ireland / Ár mBáid Dúchais i Leitir Mealláin ar 26ú Iúil, 2008, faoi choimirce Coiste Oidhreachta Chomhar Chuigéil, eagraithe ag an stairí mara John Bhaba Jack Ó Conghaile. Bhí freastal maith ar na rásaí bád níos moille an lá céanna. Radharc iontach ab ea an scór báid a bhí ar ancoire i gcaladh álainn Fornais, idir báid mhóra, gleoiteoga agus púcáin. Do 'rith' na céadta báid móin as an áit seo go hÁrainn anuas go dtí 1970 nó mar sin.

The book was officially launched by sailor and writer Padraic de Bhaldraithe (right). West Clare Turf Boat Project

West Clare Turf Boat Project

The West Clare Currach Club has initiated a project to record the remains of perhaps the last turf boat to have carried turf from Poulnasherry Bay to Limerick. Until the early years of the 20th century, some 20 turf boats operated out of Poulnasherry Bay, just west of Kilrush, carrying hundreds of thousands of tons of fuel to Limerick. Many more operated from the Querrin shore of the Shannon, and from Carrigaholt and even Kilbaha, beyond the mouth of the river.
